Memorabilia Pages
Medals & Trophies ...
One of the pleasures I've gained whilst creating this website is the personal contact over the years, not only with the current crop of Hammers players (First Team down to the Youth players) but also the Ex-Hammers, players such as ALAN DICKIE (1962 - 1965) and MARK SMITH (1979) . Both ex-players are the first to entrust to be photographed their most prized possessions, Medals and Trophies won whilst with the Hammers. They have given permission to allowed their items to be displayed to a much wider audience on the "West Ham United Memorabilia Collection" website.
Just to be able to get a close look at the awards these players received in games such as the "Andrews Cup", "Winchester Cup" and also the "Forest Division" League, and in more recent times the "South East Counties League" are priceless as these Competitions and Leagues have long since gone.
Over the years many more players medals and mementoes have found there way onto the auction catalogues and have subsequently been bought by collectors, never to be seen again.
Goalkeeper Jim Standen's 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup medal was sold at Christie's auction back in 1994. Fortunately for us an image was secured.
More recently Frank Piercy's Nine carat gold medal from 1923, given by the club to their assistant trainer to commemorate reaching the F.A. Cup Final and winning promotion to the First Division in the same year went under the Hammer (pardon the pun).
CAN YOU HELP?
Do you have in your possession an item of interest, you may be a family member of an ex-player, you may even have bought such an item in the past from an auction house or indeed you are one of the many Ex-Hammers players over the years who have contributed in the success of the club, please help us by sharing an image from the "Big Day".

If you can help us preserve and display an item from West Ham United's past rich heritage of memorabilia so the world can enjoy.
Please, please get in touch, email:

MARK SMITH
Mark looked destined to follow in the tradition of a long line of Upton Park full-backs, he instead had a career of latent promise cruelly cut short by injury. A West Hammer by birth, he had won rave notices with Newham, Essex and London Boys and was an England trialist before signing for his local club in October 1979. After skippering the Youth team he made his initial senior appearance against Southend United at Upton Park in a 5-1 victory in the League Cup 2nd replay on the 8th October 1979 and his Second Division League bow came against Swansea Town before the tragic termination of his career.

MALCOLM PYKE
Malcolm was a steady, constructive defender who provided vital cover for the wing-half berths during the victorious 1957-58 promotion season. Progressed through the junior ranks to make his initial Second Division appearance against Bristol City in a 3-1 victory at Upton Park on the 22nd April 1957. Won a coveted Second Division Championship medal the following year.
Unfortunately Malcolm didn't have any First Division outings when the Hammers returned to the top-flight in 1958-59. He subsequently transferred to Crystal Palace in the exchange deal which brought Ron Brett to the Boleyn Ground.

THAMES IRON WORKS FEDERATED CLUBS
SIMON CHISHOLM
Southern League Championship Division II (1898-99)
Simon came from Inverness Thistle club who were a Scottish non-league side. He played for them in their Scottich F.A. Cup match against Dundee in 1896-97, but in the latter part of that season he made the long trip South to obtain employment at Thames Ironworks. He not only found work as Engine Fitter at the yard but he went straight into the football club's first eleven for the 1897-98 campaign where he played in all but one game inthe london League Championship winning side. He also figured in four various cup ties and at least eleven friendly fixtures. A tough tackling half back with a good ball distribution he played a vital part in the 1898-99 campaign when Thames won the Southern League Second Division title, appearing 17 times including their Championship decider and Test match. He also played in 3 F.A. Cup ties and 10 Thames & Medway Combination matches. His best position was at left half but when Thames brought in a number of players for the 1899-1900 season he was no longer "in the frame" mainly due to the signing of Roddy McEachrane. Simon then signed for Barking Woodville in October 1899, but he moved to Kent in 1900 and played for Chatham in the Souther League until that club went into liquidation in 1901.

FRANK PIERCY
West Ham United gave this Nine carat gold medal to their assistant trainer to commemorate reaching the F.A. Cup final and winning promotion to the First Division in the same year 1923. The medal, inscribed: "F.A. Cup Finalists 1923, members of 1st Div, Football League" and on the reverse "West Ham United", was presented to Frank Piercy, who captained the Irons in their trail-blazing non-league days before becoming assistant to trainer Charlie Paynetr. Altogether, Piercy spent more than 20 years with West Ham after joining the club from his home town club, Middlesbrough, in 1904 - the year the Irons left their old ground, Memorial Recreation Cground, Canning Town and moved into their new gleaming new stadium, the Boleyn Ground. Between 1904 and 1911, tough-tackling defender Piercy, a former blacksmith, made 214 Southern League appearances for the Hammers, against teams such as Spurs, Reading and Portsmouth, who were also non-league clubs in those days. For four years betweeen 1907 and 1911 he was West Ham's captain. He was banned for four weeks in 1907 after a fight with Swindon Town star, Charlie Bannister, who was also banned for six weeks for starting the fight. Piercy was in trouble again later that season when he tackled a Millwall player who "left the field in an unconscious state". Injuries forced Frank to quit playing in 1912, and he became West Ham's assistant trainer. He was with the club when they were admitted to the Football League in 1919 and when, in 1923 they reached the first F.A. Cup final staged at the newly built £800,000 Wembley Stadium. Piercy died in 1931.

GEOFF HURST
A competent wing-half who by sheer determination and hard work became one of the most feared and revered strikers in World football. Of course, he had some help on the way notably from Ron Greenwood who converted him to striker. He made his first senior appearance v Fulham in a Floodlit Cup-tie in December 1958, signed professional forms four months later and made his First Division baptism 27th February 1960 against Nottingham Forest. After that his goalscoring exploits became a legend. His World Cup Final "hat-trick" in 1966 and six goals against Sunderland two years later have been woven into the fabric of football folk lore. The second-highest Hammers' marksman of all time behind Vic Watson with 180 League goals, plus 72 in the Cups; holder of 49 full England caps, winner of F.A. and European Cup Winners Cup medals in 1964 and '65...World Cup Winners medal and Football League Cup Runners-up medals, 1966. These are the landmarks the fans remember most; but he is most respected by his fellow-professionals for his unselfish ability to create, as well as take goals.
